Current prospects
During the 2020s, nuclear industry interest in small modular reactors (SMR) has grown enormously, on the expectation that smaller reactors will permit faster deployment with lower financing costs during the build, and lower cost from higher-volume factory manufacturing of the smaller major components, more than compensating for the economies of scale of traditional large reactors. In 2026, Natixis Corporate and Investment Banking reported that the SMR sector was still far from commercial reality and was entering a phase where engineering ambition must confront regulatory complexity, financing realities and industrial execution.
