3GPP also defines non-terrestrial networks (NTN) that use satellites and airborne platforms to provide coverage where ground networks are impractical. In 2024, the European Space Agency demonstrated the first ground 5G NTN connection to a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite from horizon to peak to horizon elevations using the Ka-band frequency range.
