It is the birthplace and global centre of the Tablighi Jamaat, the missionary and reformist movement started by Muhammad Ilyas Kandhlawi in 1926. The congregation is led by his great-grandson, AmeerMuhammad Saad Kandhlawi, since 2015.

Since 2015, frictions developed within Tablighi Jamaat over the leadership of the organisation; however, the mosque remains the headquarters for the Nizamuddin branch of the movement.
