New French Extremity

New French Extremity is a term applied a range of films made at the turn of the 21st century that were considered extreme or transgressive. Films of the New French Extremity are characterized by graphic depictions of violence, especially sexual violence, and explicit sexual imagery. Though initially associated with the work of turn-of-the-century French filmmakers such as Gaspar Noé and Catherine Breillat, non-French films subsequently became associated with "new extremity", and use of the label has endured into the 2020s.
