New Currents

New Currents is a competitive section of Busan International Film Festival's official selection. The section was introduced at the festival's inaugural edition, in 1996.

It showcases the first or second feature films by up-and-coming Asian directors. The two winning directors are awarded each a prize of US$30,000.

From 2025 'The New Currents' section was merged into the newly created Competition and Vision sections, the festival retained the New Currents Award, recognizing a debut feature by a first-time filmmaker chosen from entries in the Competition and Vision categories. A dedicated jury oversees the selection for this award.
