Terminology

Nahuatl came to be identified with the politically dominant mēxihcah ethnic group, and consequently the Nahuatl language has been called mēxihcacopa (literally 'in the manner of Mexicas') or mēxihcatlahtolli 'Mexica language'. The language is now called Mexicano by many of its native speakers, a term dating to the early colonial period and usually pronounced the Spanish way, with [h] or [x] rather than [ʃ].
