Manifesto of the Oppressed Black Mauritanian
The Manifesto of the Oppressed Black Mauritanian (French: Le Manifeste du Négro-Mauritanien Opprimé) was published in April 1986 by the African Liberation Forces of Mauritania (FLAM), a Black Mauritanian political opposition movement formed in 1983. The manifesto set out grievances concerning racial discrimination and the political and cultural marginalization of Black Mauritanians, addressing government employment, the economy, the military, education, the mass media and Arabization policies.
The manifesto called for the replacement of what it described as the beydane political system with a system that was fair and egalitarian and in which all of Mauritania's communities could participate. Its distribution was followed in September 1986 by the arrest of more than thirty Black Mauritanians, twenty-one of whom were subsequently tried and convicted.
