Lapu-Lapu, officially the City of Lapu-Lapu (Cebuano: Dakbayan sa Lapu-Lapu; Filipino: Lungsod ng Lapu-Lapu), is a highly urbanized city of Cebu in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines and is situated mainly on Mactan Island. According to the 2024 census, it has a population of 497,813 people.
It was formerly known as Opon, which was changed to its present name in 1961 in honor of the first Filipino hero Lapulapu.
Lapu-Lapu is one of three highly urbanized cities in Cebu alongside Cebu City and Mandaue that collectively constitute the Metro Cebu metropolitan area. Although geographically situated within the province of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu City is administratively independent and classified under Cebu by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). It is the second most populous city in both Cebu and the Central Visayas region, following the capital, Cebu City.
The second busiest airport in the Philippines, Mactan–Cebu International Airport, is located in Lapu-Lapu City. It opened in 1966 and serves as a hub for Philippine Airlines, and as an operating base for Cebu Pacific and Philippines AirAsia.
