Topic summary
Lane splitting

Lane splitting is riding a bicycle or motorcycle between lanes or rows of stopped or slow traffic moving in the same direction. It is sometimes called whitelining, filtering, or stripe-riding. This allows riders to save time, bypassing traffic congestion, and may also be safer than stopping behind stationary vehicles.
The terms "lane filtering" and "lane splitting" are sometimes contrasted. In these contexts, lane filtering refers to motorcycles moving through traffic that is stopped, such as at a red traffic light, while lane splitting refers to motorcycles overtaking vehicles in the same lane in moving traffic. However, the terms are often used interchangeably.
