Peace and protection
Individuals received protection through kinship ties or by entering the service of a lord. The king could grant individuals a personal peace (or grith). For example, the king's peace protected his counselors when travelling to and from meetings of the witan. Foreign traders and others not protected by lordship or kinship ties were under the king's protection.
