Authoritarianism

Officially, Cuba frames itself as a "people's democracy", as opposed to the "liberal democracy" of Western states. Cuba thus rejects criticism of its political system as a lack of appreciation for different forms of democracy other than those in capitalist states. It alludes to the grass roots elements in the nomination of candidates at neighborhood level (in the so-called circunscripciónes). An 2025 Cuban Observatory of Human Rights opinion poll found high disapproval rates of the government of Cuba.
