Floating dock (jetty)

A floating dock, floating pier or floating jetty is a floating platform or structure within a body of water that is supported by pontoons and usually connected to the bank or shore via a gangway/linkspan. Such platforms are usually moored in place by vertical pillars that are embedded in the seafloor (referred to as pilings) or by anchoredcables. Frequently used in marinas as dockingpiers, this type of platform can self-adjust to variations in water levels and maintain a constant relative vertical relationship to the watercraft secured to it (as both will float identically with the water surface), regardless of tidal, weather and discharge conditions, while the incline of the gangway/linkspan will vary with the water level.
