British by Descent or Otherwise than by Descent

British nationality can be classified as by descent or otherwise than by descent. Persons who are British otherwise than by descent can pass on British citizenship to their children born abroad. Generally, a person is considered to be British otherwise than by descent if they are a British citizen who was born or naturalized in the UK. Persons registered in the UK can be considered by descent or otherwise than by descent. For cases of registration, by descent status is layed out clearly in the relevant legislation. Person registered before 1983 are usually considered British otherwise than by descent as long as the registration occurred in the UK (note: this includes children of British mothers registered under s. 7 of the BNA 1948) and can thus pass on British citizenship to their children born abroad.
