2025 Supreme Court orders

On 20th November 2025 Supreme Court issued an order stating that landforms rising over 100 meters with respect to surrounding terrain would be considered as Aravalli Hills and 2 such hills within 500 meters of each other with land between them are considered an Aravalli range. Hills under 100 m can be used for mining, making buildings and for other works. However, on 29th December the Supreme Court stayed its order following protests by residents, farmers, environmentalists, lawyers and political parties. On June 3, 2026, the Supreme Court set up a five-member expert committee led by Kanchan Devi, the head of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE). This team was given the job of clearing up confusion around the definition of the hills and must submit their final report by August 31, 2026.
