Watchful waiting (also watch and wait or WAW) is an approach to a medical problem in which time is allowed to pass before medical intervention or therapy is used. During this time, repeated testing may be performed. Related terms include expectant management, active surveillance (especially active surveillance of prostate cancer), and masterly inactivity. The term masterly inactivity is also used in nonmedical contexts.

Active surveillance of prostate cancerActive surveillance of prostate cancerActive surveillance is a management option for localized prostate cancer that can be offered to appropriate patients who would also be candidates for aggressive local therapies (surgery and radiotherapy), with the intent to intervene if the disease progresses. Active surveillance should not be confused with watchful waiting, another observational strategy for men who would not be candidates for curative therapy (surgery, radiation) because of a limited life expectancy.Medical observationMedical observation is a medical service aimed at continued care of selected patients, usually for a period of 6 to 24 (sometimes more) hours, to determine their need for inpatient admission. This service is usually provided in emergency departments.Abdominal painAbdominal painAbdominal pain, also known as a stomach ache, is a symptom associated with both non-serious and serious medical issues. It can be performed by continuously measuring certain parameters by using a medical monitor (for example, by continuously measuring vital signs by a bedside monitor), and/or by repeatedly performing medical tests (such as blood glucose monitoring with a glucose meter in people with diabetes mellitus).Signs and symptomsSigns and symptomsSigns and symptoms (S/S) are diagnostic indications of an illness, injury, or condition.
