Transport in Norway is highly influenced by Norway's low population density, narrow shape and rugged coastline. Norway has old water transport traditions, but road, rail and air transport have increased in importance during the 20th century. Due to the low population density, public transport is somewhat less built out in rural areas of Norway, however public transport in and around cities is well developed.

Public transportPublic transportPublic transport (also known as public transportation, public transit, mass transit, or simply transit) refers to forms of transport made available for use by the general public. Public transport systems typically operate on fixed routes and schedules and charge a standardized fare intended to cover operating costs, often supplemented by public funding where required. There is no universally fixed definition of which modes are included.WiderøeWiderøeFounded19 February 1934 (1934-02-19)Operating basesBergenBodøOsloSandefjordTromsøFrequent-flyer programNorwegian RewardFleet size50Destinations56Parent companyNorwegian Air ShuttleHeadquartersBodø, NorwayKey peopleTore Jenssen (CEO)FounderViggo WiderøeEmployees3,500Websitewww.wideroe.noWiderøe's Flyveselskap AS, trading as Widerøe, is a Norwegianregional airline and the largest regional airline operating in the Nordic countries.Counties of NorwayCounties of NorwayThe 15 counties of Norway are the first-level administrative divisions of Norway. Rail transport is one of the two primary means of land transport, next to road transport. It is used for about 8% of passenger and freight transport globally, thanks to its energy efficiency and potentially high speed.Road transportRoad transportRoad transport or road transportation is a type of transport using roads. Transport on roads can be roughly grouped into the transportation of goods and transportation of people. In many countries licensing requirements and safety regulations ensure a separation of the two industries. Aircraft include fixed-wing and rotary-wing types, morphable wings, wing-less lifting bodies, as well as lighter-than-air aircraft such as hot air balloons and airships. Aviation began in the 18th century with the development of the hot air balloon, an apparatus capable of atmospheric displacement through buoyancy.Maritime transportMaritime transportMaritime transport (or ocean transport) or more generally waterborne transport, is the transport of people (passengers) or goods (cargo) via waterways. Freight transport by watercraft has been widely used throughout recorded history, as it provides a higher-capacity mode of transportation for passengers and cargo than land transport, the latter typically being more costly per unit payload due to it being affected by terrain conditions and road/rail infrastructures.
