A sand lance or sandlance is a ray-finned fish belonging to the family Ammodytidae. Several species of sand lances are commonly known as "sand eels", though they are not related to true eels. Another variant name is launce, and all names of the fish are references to its slender body and pointed snout. The family name (and genus name, Ammodytes) means "sand burrower", which describes the sand lance's habit of burrowing into sand to avoid tidal currents.

SalmonSalmonCommercially important migratory fishSalmon (; pl.: salmon) are any of several commercially importantspecies of euryhalineray-finned fish from the generaSalmo and Oncorhynchus of the familySalmonidae, native to tributaries of the North Atlantic (Salmo) and North Pacific (Oncorhynchus) basins. Salmon is a colloquial or common name used for fish in this group, but is not a scientific name.Sand eelSand eelSand eel or sandeel is the common name used for a considerable number of species of fish. While they are not true eels, they are eel-like in their appearance and can grow up to 30 cm (12 in) in length. Many species are found off the western coasts of Europe from Spain to Scotland, and in the and Baltic Seas. Sand eels are an important food source for seabirds, including puffins and kittiwakes.AmmodytesAmmodytesAmmodytes is a genus of sand lances native to the northern oceans.CodCodCod (pl.: cod) is the common name for the demersal fish genus Gadus, belonging to the family Gadidae. Cod is also used as part of the common name for several other fish species, and one species that belongs to genus Gadus is not commonly called cod (Alaska pollock, Gadus chalcogrammus).PuffinPuffinPuffins are any of three species of small alcids (auks) in the bird genusFratercula. These are pelagicseabirds that feed primarily by diving in the water. They breed in large colonies on coastal cliffs or offshore islands, nesting in crevices among rocks or in burrows in the soil. Two species, the tufted puffin and horned puffin, are found in the North Pacific Ocean, while the Atlantic puffin is found in the North Atlantic Ocean.LarvaLarvaA larva (; pl.: larvae) is a distinct juvenile form many animals undergo before metamorphosis into their next life stage. Animals with indirect development such as insects, some arachnids, amphibians, or cnidarians typically have a larval phase of their life cycle. A larva's appearance is generally very different from the adult form (e.g.caterpillars and butterflies) including different unique structures and organs that do not occur in the adult form.WhaleWhaleWhales are a widely distributed and diverse group of fully aquaticplacentalmarine mammals. As an informal and colloquial grouping, they correspond to large members of the infraorder Cetacea, i.e. all cetaceans apart from dolphins and porpoises. Dolphins and porpoises may be considered whales from a formal, cladistic perspective. Whales, dolphins and porpoises belong to the order Cetartiodactyla, which consists of even-toed ungulates.Swim bladderSwim bladderThe swim bladder, gas bladder, fish maw, air bladder or sound is an internal gas-filled organ in bony fish that functions to modulate buoyancy, and thus allowing the fish to stay at desired water depth without having to maintain lift via swimming, which expends more energy. The ventral position of the swim bladder means that the center of mass is above the center of buoyancy, reducing stability but improving maneuverability.CopepodCopepodCopepods (; meaning 'oar-feet') are a group of small crustaceans found in nearly every freshwater and saltwaterhabitat.Pelvic finPelvic finPelvic fins or ventral fins are paired fins located on the ventral (belly) surface of fish, and are the lower of the only two sets of paired fins (the other being the laterally positioned pectoral fins). The pelvic fins are homologous to the hindlimbs of tetrapods, which evolved from lobe-finned fish during the Middle Devonian. Structure and functionStructureIn actinopterygians, the pelvic fin consists of two endochondrally-derived bony girdles attached to bony radials.Atlantic OceanAtlantic OceanOceanic divisionThis video was taken by the crew of on board the ISS. The pass starts from just northeast of the island of Newfoundland over the North Atlantic Ocean to central Africa, over South Sudan. The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest of the world's five oceans, with an area of about 85,133,000 square kilometers (32,870,000 sq mi). It covers approximately 17% of Earth's surface and about 24% of its water surface area.EelEelEels are ray-finned fish belonging to the order Anguilliformes (), which consists of eight suborders, 20 families, 164 genera, and about 1000 species. Eels undergo considerable development from the early larval stage to the eventual adult stage and are usually predators.
