Real union is a union of two or more states, which share some state institutions in contrast to personal unions; however, they are not as unified as states in a political union. It is a development from personal union and has historically been limited to monarchies. Unlike personal unions, real unions almost exclusively led to a reduction of sovereignty for the politically weaker constituent.

Political unionPolitical unionA political union is a type of political entity which is composed of, or created from, smaller polities or the process which achieves this. These smaller polities are usually called federated states and federal territories in a federal government; they are called prefectures, regions, or provinces in the case of a centralised government.Personal unionPersonal unionSituation of two states sharing a monarch without merging Part of the Politics seriesMonarchy Central concepts MonarchMonarchismDivine right of kingsEnlightened
