In the magnetosphere, the plasma sheet is a sheet-like region of denser hot plasma and lower magnetic field located on the magnetotail and near the equatorial plane, between the magnetosphere's north and south lobes. In the near-Earth magnetotail (roughly 7–20 RE), the central plasma sheet typically has ion number densities of about 0.1–0.5 cm, whereas the adjacent tail lobes contain much more tenuous plasma with densities of order 0.01–0.1 cm, i.e. roughly an order of magnitude lower.

Magnetic fieldMagnetic fieldProperty of space that quantifies the magnetic influence at a given locationIn magnetism and electromagnetism, magnetic field is a physical property of space that quantifies the magnetic influence at a given location.MagnetosphereMagnetosphereIn astronomy and planetary science, a magnetosphere is a region of space surrounding an astronomical object, such as a planet or other object, in which charged particles are affected by that object's magnetic field. It is created by a celestial body with an active interior dynamo. In the space environment close to a planetary body with a dipole magnetic field such as Earth, the field lines resemble a simple magnetic dipole.Plasma (physics)Plasma (physics)Plasma is a state of matter that results from one of the other three classical states (often, the gaseous one) having undergone an appreciable degree of ionization. It thus consists of a significant portion of charged particles (ions and/or electrons). While rarely encountered on Earth, it is estimated that 99.9% of all ordinary matter in the universe is plasma.Magnetic reconnectionMagnetic reconnectionMagnetic reconnection is a physical process occurring in electrically conducting plasmas, in which the magnetic topology is rearranged and magnetic energy is converted to kinetic energy, thermal energy, and particle acceleration. Magnetic reconnection involves plasma flows at a substantial fraction of the Alfvén wave speed, which is the fundamental speed for mechanical information flow in a magnetized plasma.Celestial equatorCelestial equatorThe celestial equator is the great circle of the imaginary celestial sphere on the same plane as the equator of a planet, by convention generally Earth. By extension, it is also a plane of reference in the equatorial coordinate system.
