A parity bit, or check bit, is a bit added to a string of binary code. Parity bits are a simple form of error detecting code. Parity bits are generally applied to the smallest units of a communication protocol, typically 8-bit octets (bytes), although they can also be applied separately to an entire message string of bits. The parity bit ensures that the total number of 1-bits in the string is even or odd. Accordingly, there are two variants of parity bits: even parity bit and odd parity bit.

Hamming codeHamming codeIn computer science and telecommunications, Hamming codes are a family of linear error-correcting codes. Hamming codes can detect one-bit and two-bit errors, or correct one-bit errors without detection of uncorrected errors. By contrast, the simple parity code cannot correct errors, and can detect only an odd number of bits in error.Error detection and correctionError detection and correctionIn information theory and coding theory with applications in computer science and telecommunications, error detection and correction (EDAC) or error control are techniques that enable reliable delivery of digital data over unreliable communication channels. Many communication channels are subject to channel noise, and thus errors may be introduced during transmission from the source to a receiver.Cyclic redundancy checkCyclic redundancy checkError-detecting code for detecting data changesA cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is an error-detecting code commonly used in digital networks and storage devices to detect accidental changes to digital data. Blocks of data entering these systems get a short check value attached, based on the remainder of a polynomial division of their contents.RAIDRAIDRAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is an orchestrated approach to computer data storage in which data is written to more than one secondary storage device. Instead of storing all data in a single hard disk drive or solid-state drive, RAID coordinates two or more such devices into a disk array. When the computer writes data to secondary storage, the RAID system distributes the data across the array.ASCIIASCIICharacter encoding standardASCII ( ), an acronym for American Standard Code for Information Interchange, is a character encoding standard for representing a particular set of 95 (English-language–focused) printable and 33 control characters – a total of 128 code points. The set of available punctuation had significant impact on the syntax of computer languages and text markup.Parity (mathematics)Parity (mathematics)In mathematics, parity is the property of an integer of whether it is even or odd. An integer is even if it is divisible by 2, and odd if it is not. For example, −4, 0, and 82 are even numbers, while −7, 5, and 23 are odd numbers. The above definition of parity applies only to integer numbers, hence it cannot be applied to numbers with fractions or decimals such as 1⁄2 or 7.2742.Binary codeBinary codeA binary code is the value of a data-encoding convention represented in a binary notation that usually is a sequence of 0s and 1s, sometimes called a bit string. For example, ASCII is an 8-bit text encoding that in addition to the human readable form (letters) can be represented as binary. Binary code can also refer to the mass nouncode that is not human readable in nature such as machine code and bytecode.BitBitThe bit is the most basic unit of information in computing and digital communication. The name is a portmanteau of binary digit. The bit represents a logical state with one of two possible values. These values are most commonly represented as 1 and 0, but other representations such as true/false, yes/no, on/off, and +/− are also widely used.Hamming weightHamming weightThe Hamming weight of a string is the number of symbols that are different from the zero-symbol of the alphabet used. It is thus equivalent to the Hamming distance from the all-zero string of the same length. For the most typical case, a given set of bits, this is the number of bits set to 1, or the digit sum of the binary representation of a given number and the ℓ₁ norm of a bit vector.PolynomialPolynomialType of mathematical expressionIn mathematics, a polynomial is a mathematical expression consisting of indeterminates (also called variables) and coefficients, that involves only the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and exponentiation to nonnegative integer powers, and has a finite number of terms. An example of a polynomial of a single indeterminate x{\displaystyle x} is x2−4x+7{\displaystyle x^{2}-4x+7}.Octet (computing)The octet is a unit of digital information in computing and telecommunications that consists of eight bits. The term is often used when the term byte might be ambiguous, as the term byte has historically been used for storage units of a variety of sizes. The term octad(e) for eight bits is no longer common.Exclusive orExclusive orRelated conceptsPropositional calculusPredicate logicBoolean algebraTruth tableTruth functionBoolean functionFunctional completenessScope (logic) ApplicationsDigital logicProgramming languagesMathematical logicPhilosophy of logicExclusive or, exclusive disjunction, exclusive alternation, logical non-equivalence, or logical inequality is a logical operator whose negation is the logical biconditional.
