IBM PC DOS (an acronym for IBM Personal Computer Disk Operating System), also known as IBM DOS or PC DOS, is a discontinued disk operating system for the IBM Personal Computer, its successors, and IBM PC compatibles. It was sold by IBM from the early 1980s into the 2000s. Developed by Microsoft, it was also sold by that company to the open market as MS-DOS. Both operating systems were identical or almost identical until 1993, when IBM began selling PC DOS 6.1 with its own new features.

Disk operating systemDisk operating systemA disk operating system (DOS) is a computer operating system that requires a hard disk (HDD), floppy disk, solid-state drive (SSD), or other direct-access storage device as secondary storage. A DOS provides a file system and a means for loading and running programs stored on the disk. The term is now historical, as most if not all operating systems for general-purpose computers now require direct-access storage devices as secondary storage.MS-DOSMS-DOSMicrosoft computer operating systemOperating systemMS-DOS ( ; acronym for Microsoft Disk Operating System, also known as Microsoft DOS) is an operating system for x86-based personal computers mostly developed by Microsoft. Collectively, MS-DOS, its alternate branding as IBM PC DOS, and a few operating systems attempting to be compatible with MS-DOS, are sometimes referred to as "DOS" (which is also the generic acronym for disk operating system).IBM PC compatibleIBM PC compatibleAn IBM PC compatible is any personal computer that is hardware- and software-compatible with the IBM Personal Computer (IBM PC) and its successors. Like the original IBM PC, an IBM PC–compatible computer uses an x86-based central processing unit, sourced either from Intel or a second source like AMD, Cyrix or other vendors such as Texas Instruments, Fujitsu, OKI, Mitsubishi or NEC, and is capable of using interchangeable commodity hardware such as expansion cards.MicrosoftMicrosoftMicrosoft Corporation is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Redmond, Washington. Released on August 12, 1981, it was created by a team of engineers and designers at International Business Machines (IBM), directed by William C. Lowe and Philip Don Estridge in Boca Raton, Florida.List of disk operating systems called DOSThis is a list of disk operating systems with the acronym DOS as part of the name (e.g., TRSDOS for the TRS-80 line of computers). Many are (or were in the day) called simply DOS within the context of their respective user communities. In the case of MS-DOS, its ubiquitousness as the operating system for IBM PC compatibles, prior to Windows 95, caused DOS to be widely used as a synonym for MS-DOS.Bill GatesBill GatesWilliam Henry Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American businessman and philanthropist. A pioneer of the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s, he co-founded the software company Microsoft in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen.
