The Omo River (Amharic: ኦሞ ወንዝ, romanized: Omo Wenz; also called Omo-Bottego) in southern Ethiopia is the largest Ethiopian river outside the Nile Basin. Its course is entirely contained within the boundaries of Ethiopia, and it empties into Lake Turkana on the border with Kenya. The river is the principal stream of an endorheicdrainage basin, the Turkana Basin.

Gibe RiverGibe RiverThe Gibe River (also Great Gibe River) is by far the largest tributary of the Omo River in southwestern Ethiopia and flows generally south-southeast. The confluence of the Gibe River 7°20′N37°22′E / 7.333°N 37.367°E / 7.333; 37.367 with the Gojeb River forms the Omo River. The whole drainage basin is sometimes referred to as the Omo-Gibe River Basin with the Gibe and the Omo draining the (respectively) upper and lower reaches.Gojeb RiverGojeb RiverThe Gojeb River is an eastward-flowing tributary of the Omo River in Ethiopia.Turkana BasinTurkana BasinThe greater Turkana Basin in East Africa (mainly northwestern Kenya and southern Ethiopia, smaller parts of eastern Uganda and southeastern South Sudan) determines a large endorheic basin, a drainage basin with no outflow centered around the north-southwards directed Gregory Rift system in Kenya and southern Ethiopia. The deepest point of the basin is the endorheic Lake Turkana, a brackish soda lake with a very high ecological productivity in the Gregory Rift.Lake TurkanaLake TurkanaLake Turkana () is a saline lake in the Kenyan Rift Valley, predominantly in northern Kenya; the far northern end crosses into Ethiopia. It is the world's largest permanent desert lake and the world's largest alkaline lake. By volume it is the world's fourth-largest salt lake after the Caspian Sea, Issyk-Kul, and Lake Van (passing the shrinking South Aral Sea), and among all lakes it ranks 22nd.Drainage basinDrainage basinA drainage basin is an area of land in which all flowing surface water converges to a single point, such as a river mouth, or flows into another body of water, such as a lake or ocean. A basin is separated from adjacent basins by a perimeter, the drainage divide, made up of a succession of elevated features, such as ridges and hills. A basin may consist of smaller basins that merge at river confluences, forming a hierarchical pattern.Ethiopia–Kenya borderEthiopia–Kenya borderThe Ethiopia–Kenya border was first identified by the United Kingdom in 1907 and refined in 1947 in the aftermath of the East African Campaign of World War II. When Kenya became independent, it was finally approved in 1970. The border stretches 861 kilometers bounded by Marsabit, Turkana, Wajir and Mandera Counties on the side of Kenya, and Borena and Dhawa Zones in the Ethiopian side.NileNileMajor river in northeast AfricaThe Nile is a major north-flowing river in northeast Africa which empties into the . At 7,088 kilometers (4,404 mi) long, it is the longest river in the world, although the volume of water it carries is much smaller than other major rivers such as the Amazon or the Congo. The Nile has played a central role in the environmental, economic, and cultural history of Africa for millennia.PliocenePlioceneSubdivision of the Neogene according to the ICS, as of 2024.Vertical axis scale: Millions of years agoEtymologyName formalityFormalUsage informationCelestial bodyEarthRegional usageGlobal (ICS)Time scale(s) usedICS Time ScaleDefinitionChronological unitEpochStratigraphic unitSeriesTime span formalityFormalLower boundary definitionBase of the Thvera magnetic event (C3n.4n), which is only 96 ka (5 precession cycles) younger than the GSSPLower boundary GSSPHeraclea Minoa section, Heraclea Minoa, Cattolica Eraclea, Sicily, Italy37°23′30″N13°16′50″E / 37.3917°N 13.2806°E / 37.3917; 13.2806Lower GSSP ratified2000Upper boundary definitionBase of magnetic polarity chronozone C2r (Matuyama)Extinction of the HaptophytesDiscoaster pentaradiatus and Discoaster surculusUpper boundary GSSPMonte San Nicola Section, Gela, Sicily, Italy37°08′49″N14°12′13″E / 37.1469°N 14.2035°E / 37.1469; 14.2035Upper GSSP ratified2009 (as base of Quaternary and Pleistocene)The Pliocene ( ; also Pleiocene) is the epoch in the geologic time scale that extends from 5.33 to 2.58 million years ago (Ma).HominidaeHominidaeThe Hominidae (; hominids), whose members are known as the great apes, are a taxonomic family of primates that includes eight extant species in four genera: Pongo (the Bornean, Sumatran and Tapanuli orangutan); Gorilla (the eastern and western gorilla); Pan (the chimpanzee and the bonobo); and Homo, of which only modern humans (Homo sapiens) remain. Instead, the water drainage flows into permanent and seasonal lakes and swamps that through evaporation. Endorheic basins are also called closed basins, terminal basins, and internal drainage systems.AmharicAmharicAmharic is an Ethio-Semitic language, which is a subgrouping within the Semitic branch of the Afroasiatic languages.
