Magnesium bromide are inorganic compounds with the chemical formula MgBr2(H2O)x, where x can range from 0 to 9. They are all white deliquescent solids. Some magnesium bromides have been found naturally as rare minerals such as bischofite and carnallite. SynthesisMagnesium bromide can be synthesized by treating magnesium oxide (and related basic salts) with hydrobromic acid. It can also be made by reacting magnesium carbonate and hydrobromic acids, and collecting the solid left after evaporation.

Magnesium oxideMagnesium oxideMagnesium oxide (MgO), or magnesia, is a white hygroscopic solid mineral that occurs naturally as periclase and is a source of magnesium (see also oxide). It has an empirical formula of MgO and consists of a lattice of Mg ions and O ions held together by ionic bonding. Magnesium hydroxide forms in the presence of water (MgO + H2O → Mg(OH)2), but it can be reversed by heating it to remove moisture.Hydrobromic acidHydrobromic acidNames IUPAC nameBromaneOther names Hydronium bromide Bromhydric acidIdentifiers CAS Number10035-10-63D model (JSmol)Interactive imageChEBICHEBI:47266ChEMBLChEMBL1231461ChemSpider255ECHA InfoCard100.240.772EC Number233-113-0Gmelin Reference620 KEGGC13645PubChemCID260RTECS numberMW3850000UNII3IY7CNP8XJUN number1048 1788 InChIInChI=1S/BrH/h1HKey: CPELXLSAUQHCOX-UHFFFAOYSA-NInChI=1/BrH/h1HKey: CPELXLSAUQHCOX-UHFFFAOYAZSMILES[OH3+].[Br-]Properties Chemical formulaHBr(aq)Molar mass80.91 g·mol Appearance colorless liquid(impure samples can appear yellowish) Odoracrid Density1.49 g/cm (48% w/w aq.)Aldol reactionAldol reactionConditions Temperature −Δ, ~−70 °CCatalystOH or HIdentifiers Organic Chemistry Portal aldol-additionRSC ontology ID RXNO:0000016The aldol reaction (aldol addition) is a reaction in organic chemistry that combines two carbonyl compounds (e.g. aldehydes or ketones) to form a new β-hydroxy carbonyl compound.Water of crystallizationWater of crystallizationIn chemistry, water(s) of crystallization or water(s) of hydration are watermolecules that are present inside crystals. Water is often incorporated in the formation of crystals from aqueous solutions. In some contexts, water of crystallization is the total mass of water in a substance at a given temperature and is mostly present in a definite (stoichiometric) ratio.CarnalliteCarnalliteCarnallite (also carnalite) is an evaporite mineral, a hydrated potassiummagnesiumchloride with formula KCl.MgCl2·6(H2O). It is variably colored yellow to white, reddish, and sometimes colorless or blue. It is usually massive to fibrous with rare pseudohexagonal orthorhombic crystals. The mineral is deliquescent (absorbs moisture from the surrounding air to the point of forming an aqueous solution) and specimens must be stored in an airtight container.AnticonvulsantAnticonvulsantClass of medicationsAnticonvulsants (also known as antiepileptic drugs, antiseizure drugs, or anti-seizure medications (ASM)) are a diverse group of pharmacological agents used in the treatment of epilepticseizures. Anticonvulsants are also used in the treatment of bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, since many seem to act as mood stabilizers, and for the treatment of neuropathic pain.BischofiteBischofiteBischofite is a hydrous magnesium chloride mineral with formula MgCl2·6H2O. It belongs to halides and is a sea salt concentrate. It contains many macro- and micro-elements vital for human health, in much higher concentrations than can be found in sea or ocean salt.Organic synthesisOrganic synthesis is a branch of chemical synthesis concerned with the construction of organic compounds. Organic compounds are molecules consisting of combinations of covalently-linked hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms. Within the general subject of organic synthesis, there are many different types of synthetic routes that can be completed including total synthesis, stereoselective synthesis, automated synthesis, and many more.Coordination polymerCoordination polymerA coordination polymer is an inorganic or organometallic polymer structure containing metal cation centers linked by ligands. More formally a coordination polymer is a coordination compound with repeating coordination entities extending in 1, 2, or 3 dimensions. It can also be described as a polymer whose repeat units are coordination complexes.Inorganic compoundInorganic compoundAn inorganic compound is typically a chemical compound that lacks carbon–hydrogen bonds‍—‍that is, a compound that is not an organic compound. The study of inorganic compounds is a subfield of chemistry known as inorganic chemistry. Inorganic compounds comprise most of the Earth's crust, although the compositions of the deep mantle remain active areas of investigation. All allotropes of carbon and some simple carbon compounds are often considered inorganic.Lewis acids and basesLewis acids and basesA Lewis acid is a chemical species that contains an empty orbital which is capable of accepting an electron pair from a Lewis base to form a Lewis adduct. A Lewis base, then, is any species that has a filled orbital containing an electron pair which is not involved in bonding but may form a dative bond with a Lewis acid to form a Lewis adduct. For example, NH3 is a Lewis base, because it can donate its lone pair of electrons.CatalysisCatalysisCatalysis (, ) is the increase in rate of a chemical reaction due to an added substance known as a catalyst ( ). Catalysts are not consumed by the reaction and remain unchanged after the reaction. If the reaction is rapid and the catalyst is recycled quickly, a very small amount of catalyst often suffices; mixing, surface area, and temperature are important factors in reaction rate.
