The GeForce 256 is the original release in Nvidia's "GeForce" product line. Announced on August 31, 1999 and released on October 11, 1999, the GeForce 256 improves on its predecessor (RIVA TNT2) by increasing the number of fixed pixel pipelines, offloading host geometry calculations to a hardware transform and lighting (T&L) engine, and adding hardware motion compensation for MPEG-2 video. It offered a notable leap in 3D PC gaming performance and was the first fully Direct3D 7-compliant 3D accelerator.

Transform, clipping, and lightingTransform, clipping, and lightingTerm used in computer graphics Transform, clipping, and lighting (T&L or TCL) is a term used in computer graphics. Overview Transformation is the task of producing a two-dimensional view of a three-dimensional scene. Clipping means only drawing the parts of the scene that will be present in the picture after rendering is completed. Lighting is the task of altering the colour of the various surfaces of the scene on the basis of lighting information.Direct3DDirect3DAPI used in Microsoft DirectX for 3D renderingDirect3D is a graphics application programming interface (API) for Microsoft Windows. Part of DirectX, Direct3D is used to render three-dimensional graphics in applications where performance is important, such as games. Direct3D uses hardware acceleration if available on the graphics card, allowing for hardware acceleration of the entire 3D rendering pipeline or even only partial acceleration.Graphics pipelineGraphics pipelineThe computer graphics pipeline, or simply graphics pipeline, also known as the rendering pipeline, is a series of procedures for transforming a three-dimensional (3D) scene into a two-dimensional (2D) representation on a screen. Once a 3D model is generated, the 3D computer graphics pipeline converts the model into a visually perceivable format on the computer display.NvidiaNvidiaAmerican multinational technology companyNvidia Corporation ( ) is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Santa Clara, California. The company develops graphics processing units (GPUs), systems on chips (SoCs), and application programming interfaces (APIs) for data science, high-performance computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and mobile and automotive applications.Voodoo3Voodoo3Voodoo3 was a series of computer gaming video cards manufactured and designed by 3dfx Interactive. It was the successor to the company's high-end Voodoo2 line and was based heavily upon the older Voodoo Banshee product. Voodoo3 was announced at COMDEX '98 and arrived on store shelves in early 1999. The Voodoo3 line was the first product manufactured by the combined STB Systems and 3dfx.GeForceGeForceGeForce is a brand of graphics processing units (GPUs) designed by Nvidia and marketed for the performance market. As of the GeForce 50 series, there have been nineteen iterations of the design. In August 2017, Nvidia stated that "there are over 200 million GeForce gamers".RIVA TNT2RIVA TNT2The RIVA TNT2 is a graphics processing unit manufactured by Nvidia starting in early 1999. The chip is codenamed "NV5" because it is the 5th graphics chip design by Nvidia, succeeding the RIVA TNT (NV4). RIVA is an acronym for Real-time Interactive Video and Animation accelerator. The "TNT" suffix refers to the chip's ability to work on two texels at once (TwiN Texel). Nvidia removed RIVA from the name later in the chip's lifetime.TSMCTSMCAbbreviationTraditional Chinese台積電Websitetsmc.comFootnotesTaiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (Chinese: 台灣積體電路製造股份有限公司; Taiwan Semiconductor or TSMC, stylised in all lowercase) is a Taiwanese multinational semiconductor contract manufacturing and design company. Headquartered in Hsinchu Science Park, it is one of the world's largest non-US companies by market capitalisation.Motion compensationMotion compensationMotion compensation in computing is an algorithmic technique used to predict a frame in a video given the previous and/or future frames by accounting for motion of the camera or objects in the video. It is employed in the encoding of video data for video compression, for example, in the generation of MPEG-2 files. Motion compensation describes a picture in terms of the transformation of a reference picture to the current picture.250 nm processThe 250 nm process (250 nanometer process or 0.25 μm process) is a level of semiconductor process technology that was reached by most manufacturers in the 1997–1998 timeframe.MPEG-2MPEG-2MPEG-2 (a.k.a. H.222/H.262 as was defined by the ITU) is a standard for "the generic coding of moving pictures and associated audio information". It describes a combination of lossy video compression and lossy audio data compression methods, which permit storage and transmission of movies using currently available storage media and transmission bandwidth.PC gamePC gameA PC game, historically also known as a computer game, is a video game played on a personal computer (PC). The term PC game has been popularly used specifically to games on Windows software with Intel hardware known as Wintel, which has dominated the computer industry since the 1990s. Mainframe and minicomputer games are a precursor to personal computer games. Home computer games became popular following the video game crash of 1983.
