Flat-file database
Database stored as flat data Example of a flat-file model A flat-file database is a tabular flat file in which each record is semantically independent – can meaningfully be interpreted and manipulated independent of other records of the table. The term flat loosely refers to data that is record-based and sequential yet lacks more complicated aspects such as nesting, relationships and metadata (with the exception of column headers).
Delimiter-separated valuesDelimiter-separated values (DSV) is a way of storing tabular data by separating the fields (values) of each row with a specific character as a delimiter. DSV is often used for data exchange and is commonly supported by database and spreadsheetsoftware. A delimited text file is a text file that stores data as DSV. Such a file can be classified as a flat-file database if, in fact, the data is database-like – accessing individual rows is meaningful.
DelimiterIn computing, a delimiter is a character or a sequence of characters for specifying the boundary between separate, independent regions in data such as a text file or data stream.Table (database)In a database, a table is a collection of related data organized in table format (consisting of columns and rows). In relational databases, and flat file databases, a table is a set of data elements (values) using a model of vertical columns (identifiable by name) and horizontal rows, the cell being the unit where a row and column intersect. A table has a specified number of columns, but can have any number of rows.
Plain textIn computing, plain text is a loose term for unformatted text or nontextual data represented as text (e.g. file contents) using printable characters (for example letters, digits, symbols, spaces, tabs, line breaks) in a character encoding. In principle, plain text can be in any encoding, but today usually implies UTF-8.
Character encodingCharacter encoding is a convention of using a numeric value to represent each character of a writing script. Not only can a character set include natural languagesymbols, but it can also include codes that have meanings or functions outside of language, such as control characters and whitespace. Character encodings have also been defined for some constructed languages. When encoded, character data can be stored, transmitted, and transformed by a computer.
Binary fileA binary file is a computer file that is not a text file. The term "binary file" is often used as a term meaning "non-text file". Many binary file formats contain parts that can be interpreted as text; for example, some computer document files containing formatted text, such as older Microsoft Word document files, contain the text of the document but also contain formatting information in binary form.
Record (computer science)In computer science, a record (also called a structure, struct, user-defined type (UDT), or compound data type) is a composite data structure – a collection of fields, possibly of different data types, typically fixed in number and sequence. For example, a date could be stored as a record containing a numericyear field, a month field represented as a string, and a numeric day-of-month field.
Relation (database)In database theory, a relation, as originally defined by E. F. Codd, is a set of tuples (d1,d2,...,dn), where each element dj is a member of Dj, a data domain. Codd's original definition notwithstanding, and contrary to the usual definition in mathematics, there is no ordering to the elements of the tuples of a relation. Instead, each element is termed an attribute value. An attribute is a name paired with a domain (nowadays more commonly referred to as a type or data type).TupleIn mathematics, a tuple is a finite sequence (or ordered list) of numbers. More generally, it is a sequence of mathematical objects, called the elements of the tuple. An n-tuple is a tuple of n elements, where n is a non-negative integer. There is only one 0-tuple, called the empty tuple. A 1-tuple and a 2-tuple are commonly called a singleton and an ordered pair, respectively. The term "infinite tuple" is occasionally used for "infinite sequences".
MetadataData about other dataIn the 21st century, metadata typically refers to digital forms, but traditional card catalogs contain metadata, with cards holding information about books in a library (author, title, subject, etc.).Metadata (or metainformation) is data (or information) that defines and describes the characteristics of other data. It often helps to describe, explain, locate, or otherwise make data easier to retrieve, use, or manage.
Nesting (computing)In computing science and informatics, nesting is where information is organized in layers, or where objects contain other similar objects. It almost always refers to self-similar or recursive structures in some sense.
SemanticsSemantics is the study of linguistic meaning. It examines what meaning is, how words get their meaning, and how the meaning of a complex expression depends on its parts. Part of this process involves the distinction between sense and reference. Sense is given by the ideas and concepts associated with an expression while reference is the object to which an expression points.
