In computing, file comparison is the calculation and display of the differences and similarities between data objects, typically text files such as source code. The methods, implementations, and results are typically called a diff, after the Unixdiff utility. The output may be presented in a graphical user interface or used as part of larger tasks in networks, file systems, or revision control. Some widely used file comparison programs are diff, cmp, FileMerge, WinMerge, Beyond Compare, and File Compare.

DiffDiffdiff is a shellcommand that compares the content of files and reports differences. The term diff is also used to identify the output of the command and is used as a verb for running the command. To diff files, one runs diff to create a diff. Typically, the command is used to compare text files, but it does support comparing binary files.Text fileText fileA text file (sometimes spelled textfile; an old alternative name is flat file) is a kind of computer file that is structured as a sequence of lines of electronic text. A text file exists stored as data within a computer file system.File systemFile systemIn computing, a file system or filesystem (FS or fs) governs file organization and access. A local file system is a capability of an operating system that services the applications running on the same computer. A distributed file system is a protocol that provides file access between networked computers. A file system provides a data storageservice that allows applications to share mass storage.Graphical user interfaceGraphical user interfaceA graphical user interface, or GUI, is a form of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices through graphical icons and visual indicators such as secondary notation. In many applications, GUIs are used instead of text-based UIs, which are based on typed command labels or text navigation. GUIs were introduced in reaction to the perceived steep learning curve of command-line interfaces (CLIs), which require commands to be typed on a computer keyboard.Computer networkComputer networkMetricsAlgorithmsCentralityGroup centralityDegreeMotifClusteringDegree distributionAssortativityDistanceModularityEfficiency ModelsListsCategoriesTopicsSoftwareNetwork scientistsIn computer science, computer engineering, and telecommunications, a network is a group of communicating computers and peripherals known as hosts, which communicate data to other hosts via communication protocols, as facilitated by networking hardware.Source codeSource codeIn computing, source code, or simply code or source, is human readableplain text that can eventually result in controlling the behavior of a computer. In order to control a computer, it must be processed by a computer program – either executed directly via an interpreter or translated into a more computer-consumable form such as via a compiler.Cmp (Unix)Cmp (Unix)cmp is a shellcommand that compares two files of any type and reports differences. By default, it outputs nothing if the files match. If they differ, it reports the byte and line number of the first difference. The exit code can be used programmatically since it is 0 if the files match, 1 if the files differ or 2 if comparison fails (i.e. inaccessible or missing argument). The command is available on Unix-like systems, OS-9, IBM i and Windows (via UnxUtils).Apple Developer ToolsApple Developer ToolsThe Apple Developer Tools are a suite of software tools from Apple to aid in making software dynamic titles for the macOS and iOS platforms. The developer tools were formerly included on macOS install media, but are now exclusively distributed over the Internet. Xcode is available as a free download from the Mac App Store. This is a 3D visualization of a neural network simulation.Computing is any goal-oriented activity that requires, benefits from, or creates computing machinery. It includes the study and experimentation of algorithmic processes, and the development of both hardware and software.UnixUnixUnix ( , YOO-niks; trademarked as UNIX) is a family of multitasking, multi-user computer operating systems that derive from the original AT&T Unix, the development of which started in 1969 at the Bell Labs research center by Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and others.Version controlVersion controlVersion control (also known as revision control, source control, and source code management) is the software engineering practice of controlling, organizing, and tracking different versions in history of computer files – primarily source codetext files, but generally any type of file. Version control is a component of software configuration management. A version control system is a software tool that automates version control.
