Deployment environment
In software deployment, an environment or tier is a computer system or set of systems in which a computer program or software component is deployed and executed. In simple cases, such as developing and immediately executing a program on the same machine, there may be a single environment, but in industrial use, the development environment (where changes are originally made) and production environment (what end users use) are separated, often with several stages in between.
Development, testing, acceptance and productionDevelopment, testing, acceptance and production (DTAP) is a phased approach to software testing and deployment. The four letters in DTAP denote the following common steps: Development: The program or component is developed on a development system. This development environment might have no testing capabilities. Testing: Once the software developer thinks it is ready, the product is copied to a test environment, to verify it works as expected.
Software deploymentSoftware deployment is all of the activities that make a software system available for use. Deployment can involve activities on the producer (software developer) side or on the consumer (user) side or both. Deployment to consumers is a hard task because the target systems are diverse and unpredictable. Software as a service avoids these difficulties by deploying only to dedicated servers that are typically under the producer's control.
Software testingChecking software against expectationsTestingCup – Polish Championship in Software Testing, Katowice, May 2016Software testing is the act of checking whether software meets its intended objectives and satisfies expectations. Software testing can provide objective, independent information about the quality of software and the risk of its failure to a user or sponsor or any other stakeholder.
Acceptance testingIn engineering and its various subdisciplines, acceptance testing is a test conducted to determine if the requirements of a specification or contract are met. It may involve chemical tests, physical tests, or performance tests. In systems engineering, it may involve black-box testing performed on a system (for example: a piece of software, lots of manufactured mechanical parts, or batches of chemical products) prior to its delivery.
Continuous integrationContinuous integration (CI) is the practice of integrating source code changes frequently and ensuring that the integrated codebase is in a workable state. Typically, developers merge changes to an integration branch, and an automated system builds and tests the software system. Often, the automated process runs on each commit or runs on a schedule such as once a day.
End userIn product development, an end user is a person who ultimately uses or is intended to ultimately use a product. The end user stands in contrast to users who support or maintain the product, such as sysops, system administrators, database administrators, information technology (IT) experts, software professionals, and computer technicians.
Release managementRelease management is the process of managing, planning, scheduling and controlling a software build through different stages and environments; it includes testing and deploying software releases.
Software componentA software component is a modular unit of software that encapsulates specific functionality. The desired characteristics of a component are reusability and maintainability. ValueComponents allow software developers to assemble software with reliable parts rather than writing code for every aspect. It makes implementation more like factory assembly than custom building.
Cloud computingCloud computing is defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as "a paradigm for enabling network access to a scalable and elastic pool of shareable physical or virtual resources with self-service provisioning and administration on demand". It is commonly referred to as "the cloud". CharacteristicsIn 2011, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) identified five "essential characteristics" for cloud systems.
Computer programInstructions a computer can executeSource code for a computer program written in the JavaScript language. It demonstrates the appendChild() method. The method adds a new child node to an existing parent node. It is commonly used to dynamically modify the structure of an HTML document.A computer program is a sequence or set of instructions in a programming language for a computer to execute.
