In human–computer interaction, a cursor is an indicator used to show the current position on a computer monitor or other display device that will respond to input, such as a text cursor or a mouse pointer. EtymologyCursor is Latin for 'runner'. A cursor is a name given to the transparent slide engraved with a hairline used to mark a point on a slide rule. The term was then transferred to computers through analogy.

Computer mouseComputer mousePointing device used to control a computerA wired computer mouse with two buttons (left and right), a scroll wheel (which functions as a button when pressed) and a cable to plug into the computerA wireless computer mouseA computer mouse (plural mice; rarely mouses) is a hand-held pointing device that detects two-dimensional motion relative to a surface.TouchpadTouchpadA touchpad or trackpad is a type of pointing device. Its largest component is a tactile sensor: an electronic device with a flat surface that detects the position and motion of a user's fingers, and translates them into 2D motion to control a pointer in a graphical user interface. Touchpads are common on laptop computers, contrasted with desktop computers, with which mice are more prevalent. Trackpads are sometimes used with desktop setups where desk space is scarce.Pointing devicePointing deviceA pointing device is a human interface device that allows a user to input spatial (i.e., continuous and multi-dimensional) data to a computer. Graphical user interfaces (GUI) and CAD systems allow the user to control and provide data to the computer using physical gestures by moving a hand-held mouse or similar device across the surface of the physical desktop and activating switches on the mouse.Graphical user interfaceGraphical user interfaceA graphical user interface, or GUI, is a form of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices through graphicalicons and visual indicators such as secondary notation. In many applications, GUIs are used instead of text-based UIs, which are based on typed command labels or text navigation. GUIs were introduced in reaction to the perceived steep learning curve of command-line interfaces (CLIs), which require commands to be typed on a computer keyboard.Screen hotspotScreen hotspotA screen hotspot, in computing, provides a special area on the display screen of a computer for hyperlinking or for other GUI-based activity (such as re-direction, pop-up display, macro execution, etc.). Hotspots may not look visually distinct; however, a mouseover operation over elements such as hyperlinks, buttons or idle windows will often reveal them by changing the shape of the pointer. The corners and edges of the whole screen may also act as hotspots.Operating systemOperating systemAn operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware and software resources, and provides common services for computer programs. Time-sharing operating systems schedule tasks for efficient use of the system and may also include accounting software for cost allocation of processor time, mass storage, peripherals, and other resources.Vertical barVertical barThe vertical bar, |, is a glyph with various uses in mathematics, computing, and typography. It has many names, often related to particular meanings: Sheffer stroke (in logic), pipe, bar, or (literally, the word "or"), vbar, and others. UsageMathematicsThe vertical bar is used as a mathematical symbol in numerous ways. If used as a pair of brackets, it suggests the notion of size.Text editorText editorA text editor is interactive software that allows a user to plain text, such as Notepad. As with any software, a text editor can be installed onto a system, but often a relatively simple text editor is included in a default installation of an operating system (OS) since editing text files is a relatively basic need for any system and since a simple text editor can be provided at relatively low cost.Display deviceDisplay deviceA display device is an output device for presentation of information in visual or tactile form (the latter used for example in tactile electronic displays for blind people). When the input information that is supplied has an electrical signal the display is called an electronic display. Common applications for electronic visual displays are television sets or computer monitors.Computer monitorComputer monitorA computer monitor is an output device that displays information in pictorial or textual form. A discrete monitor comprises a visual display, support electronics, power supply, housing, electrical connectors, and external user controls. The display in modern monitors is typically an LCD with LED backlight, having by the 2010s replaced CCFLbacklit LCDs. Before the mid-2000s, most monitors used a cathode ray tube (CRT) as the image output technology.Human–computer interactionHuman–computer interactionHuman–computer interaction (HCI) is the process through which people operate and engage with computer systems. Research in HCI covers the design and the use of computer technology, which focuses on the interfaces between people (users) and computers. HCI researchers observe how people interact with computers and design technologies that allow humans to interact with computers in new ways.SerifSerifIn typography, a serif () is a small line or stroke regularly attached to the end of a larger stroke in a letter or symbol within a particular font or family of fonts. A typeface or "font family" making use of serifs is called a serif typeface (or serifed typeface), like so, and a typeface that does not include them is sans-serif.
