A cross compiler is a compiler capable of creating executable code for a platform other than the one on which the compiler is running. For example, a compiler that runs on a PC but generates code that runs on Android devices is a cross compiler. A cross compiler is useful to compile code for multiple platforms from one development host. Direct compilation on the target platform might be infeasible, for example on embedded systems with limited computing resources.

CompilerCompilerIn computing, a compiler is software that translates computer code written in one programming language (the source language) into another language (the target language). The name "compiler" is primarily used for programs that translate source code from a high-level programming language to a low-level programming language (e.g., assembly language, object code, or machine code) to create an executable program.Aztec CAztec CAztec C is a discontinued C programming languagecompiler for CP/M-80, MS-DOS, Apple II (both Apple DOS 3.3 and ProDOS), Commodore 64, early Macintosh, Amiga, and Atari ST. It was sold commercially by Manx Software Systems. HistoryManx Software Systems of Shrewsbury, New Jersey produced C programming language compilers beginning in the 1980s for CP/M, Apple II, IBM PC compatibles, Macintosh, and other systems.Source-to-source compilerSource-to-source compilerA source-to-source translator, source-to-source compiler (S2S compiler), transcompiler, or transpiler is a type of translator that takes the source code of a program written in a programming language as its input and produces an equivalent source code in the same or a different programming language, usually as an intermediate representation.ARM architecture familyARM architecture familyFamily of RISC-based computer architecturesARM (stylised in lowercase as arm) is a family of RISCinstruction set architectures for computer processors. Arm Holdings develops the instruction set architecture and licenses it to other companies, who build the physical devices that use the instruction set. It also designs and licenses cores that implement these instruction set architectures.Computing platformA computing platform, digital platform, or software platform is the infrastructure on which software is executed. While the individual components of a computing platform may be obfuscated under layers of abstraction, the summation of the required components comprise the computing platform.Embedded systemEmbedded systemAn embedded system is a specialized computer system—a combination of a computer processor, computer memory, and input/outputperipheral devices—that has a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electronic system. It is embedded as part of a complete device, often including electrical or electronic hardware and mechanical parts. Embedded systems control many devices in common use.Android (operating system)Android (operating system)Android is an operating system developed by Google, designed primarily for smartphones and tablets (touchscreen-based mobile devices originally; later for other devices, such as TVs and PCs), based on a modified version of the Linux kernel and other open-source software. First released in 2008, Android is the world's most widely used operating system with 3.9 billion users, and the most used operating system for smartphones.Windows XPWindows XP2001 Microsoft operating system versionOperating systemWindows XP (stylized as Windows) is a major release of Microsoft's Windows NT operating system. It was released to manufacturing on August 24, 2001, and later to retail on October 25 that year. It is a direct successor to Windows 2000 for high-end and business users and Windows Me for home users.Cross-platform softwareCross-platform softwareWithin computing, cross-platform software (also called multi-platform software, platform-agnostic software, or platform-independent software) is computer software that is designed to work in several computing platforms.Personal computerPersonal computerA personal computer (PC), or simply computer, is a computer designed for personal use. It is typically used for tasks such as word processing, web browsing, email, file management, spreadsheets, and video calling. Personal computers are meant to be operated directly by an end user, rather than by a computer expert, administrator, company or technician.Programming toolProgramming toolA programming tool or software development tool is a computer program that is used to develop another computer program, usually by helping the developer manage computer files. For example, a programmer may use a tool called a to edit source code files, and then a compiler to convert the source code into machine code files. They may also use build automation tools that automatically package executable program and data files into shareable packages or install kits.ExecutableExecutableIn computing, an executable is a resource that a computer can use to control its behavior. As with all information in computing, it is data, but distinct from data that does not imply a flow of control. Terms such as executable code, executable file, executable program, and executable image describe forms in which the information is represented and stored. A native executable is machine code and is directly executable at the instruction level of a CPU.
