In geometry, a coordinate system is a system that uses one or more numbers, or coordinates, to uniquely determine and standardize the position of the points or other geometric elements on a manifold such as Euclidean space. The coordinates are not interchangeable; they are commonly distinguished by their position in an ordered tuple, or by a label, such as in "the x-coordinate".

Euclidean spaceEuclidean spaceEuclidean space is the fundamental space of geometry, intended to represent physical space. Originally, in Euclid's Elements, it was the three-dimensional space of Euclidean geometry, but in modern mathematics there are Euclidean spaces of any positive integer dimensionn, which are called Euclidean n-spaces when one wants to specify their dimension. For n equal to one or two, they are commonly called respectively Euclidean lines and Euclidean planes.ManifoldManifoldTopological space that locally resembles Euclidean spaceThe Klein bottle immersed in three-dimensional spaceThe surface of the Earth requires (at least) two charts to include every point without plotting the same point more than once on the same chart. Here the globe is decomposed into charts around the North and South Poles. In mathematics, a manifold is a topological space that locally resembles Euclidean space near each point.Point (geometry)Point (geometry)Fundamental object of geometry A finite set of points (in red) in the Euclidean plane.Complex numberComplex numberNumber with a real and an imaginary partA complex number z = a + bi can be visually represented as a pair of numbers (a, b) forming a position vector (blue) or a point (red) on an Argand diagram, representing the complex plane.Position (geometry)Position (geometry)In geometry, a position or position vector, also known as location vector or radius vector, is a Euclidean vector that represents a pointP in space. Its length represents the distance in relation to an arbitrary reference originO, and its direction represents the angular orientation with respect to given reference axes.Analytic geometryAnalytic geometryStudy of geometry using a coordinate system In mathematics, analytic geometry, also known as coordinate geometry or Cartesian geometry, is the study of geometry using a coordinate system. This contrasts with synthetic geometry. Analytic geometry is used in physics and engineering, and also in aviation, rocketry, space science, spaceflight, statistics, economics, and the social sciences.GeometryGeometryBranch of mathematics GeometryProjecting a sphere to a plane Branches Euclidean Non-Euclidean Elliptic Spherical Hyperbolic Non-Archimedean geometry Projective Affine Synthetic Analytic Algebraic Arithmetic Diophantine Differential Riemannian Symplectic Discrete differential Complex Finite Discrete/Combinatorial Digital Convex Computational Fractal Incidence Noncommutative geometry Noncommutative algebraic geometry ConceptsFeaturesDimension Straightedge and compass constructions Angle Polytope Centroid Diagonal Orthogonality (Perpendicular) Parallel Vertex Congruence Similarity Symmetry Zero-dimensional Point One-dimensional Line Line segment Ray Curve Geodesic Length Two-dimensional Surface Plane Area Polygon Simple Convex Concave Star Regular Reuleaux Triangle Centers Altitude Hypotenuse Pythagorean theorem Circular Reuleaux Hyperbolic Ideal Spherical Quadrilateral Parallelogram Rectangle Square Rhombus Rhomboid Trapezoid Kite Circle Radius Diameter Circumference Disk Area Three-dimensional Surface area Volume Polyhedron Platonic Solid Tetrahedron Reuleaux cuboid Cube Octahedron Dodecahedron Icosahedron Pyramid Star Toroidal Ideal Solid of revolution Sphere Great circle Cylinder Cone Four - other-dimensional 4-polytope Simplex 5-cell Hypercube Tesseract n-sphere Geometers by name Aida Aryabhata Ahmes Alhazen Apollonius Archimedes Atiyah Baudhayana Bolyai Brahmagupta Cartan Chern Coxeter Descartes Euclid Euler Gauss Gromov Hilbert Huygens Jyeṣṭhadeva Kātyāyana Khayyám Klein Lobachevsky Manava Minkowski Minggatu Pascal Pythagoras Parameshvara Poincaré Riemann Sakabe Sijzi al-Tusi Veblen Virasena Yang Hui al-Yasamin Zhang List of geometers by period BCE Ahmes Baudhayana Manava Pythagoras Euclid Archimedes Apollonius 1–1400s Zhang Kātyāyana Aryabhata Brahmagupta Virasena Alhazen Sijzi Khayyám al-Yasamin al-Tusi Yang Hui Parameshvara 1400s–1700s Jyeṣṭhadeva Descartes Pascal Huygens Minggatu Euler Sakabe Aida 1700s–1900s Gauss Lobachevsky Bolyai Riemann Klein Poincaré Hilbert Minkowski Cartan Veblen Coxeter Chern Present day Atiyah Gromov vte Geometry is a branch of mathematics concerned with properties of space such as the distance, shape, size, and relative position of figures.NumberNumberUsed to count, measure, and labelSet inclusions between the natural numbers (ℕ), the integers (ℤ), the decimal fractions (𝔻), the rational numbers (ℚ), the real numbers (ℝ), and the complex numbers (ℂ)A number is a mathematical object used to count, measure, and label. The most basic examples are the natural numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and so forth.Real numberReal numberIn mathematics, a real number is a number that can be used to measure a continuous one-dimensionalquantity such as a length, duration or temperature. Here, continuous means that pairs of values can have arbitrarily small differences. Every real number can be almost uniquely represented by an infinite decimal expansion.Elementary mathematicsElementary mathematicsElementary mathematics, also known as primary or secondary schoolmathematics, is the study of mathematics topics that are commonly taught at the primary or secondary school levels around the world. It includes a wide range of mathematical concepts and skills, including number sense, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis.Commutative ringCommutative ringIn mathematics, a commutative ring is a ring in which the multiplication operation is commutative. The study of commutative rings is called commutative algebra. Complementarily, noncommutative algebra is the study of ring properties that are not specific to commutative rings. This distinction results from the high number of fundamental properties of commutative rings that do not extend to noncommutative rings.TupleIn mathematics, a tuple is a finite sequence (or ordered list) of numbers. More generally, it is a sequence of mathematical objects, called the elements of the tuple. An n-tuple is a tuple of n elements, where n is a non-negative integer. There is only one 0-tuple, called the empty tuple. A 1-tuple and a 2-tuple are commonly called a singleton and an ordered pair, respectively. The term "infinite tuple" is occasionally used for "infinite sequences".coordinate systemcoordinate systemRelated word or term.coordinatecoordinateRelated word or term.
