Compile time
In computing, compile time is the period of time when a compiler processes source code into other code that is more readily executable – typically object code or byte code. Compile time is a phase in the operational life cycle of a program as it transitions from development to execution. The length of time it takes to compile is usually referred to as compilation time although compile time might also be used. Compile time can be subdivided by the phases of a compiler.
Execution (computing)In computing, execution is a process by which a computer program is read by a computer and the computer performs the actions encoded in the program. As the processor follows the program instructions, effects are produced in accordance with the semantics of those instructions. The term run is generally synonymous with execute. The act of starting execution is often called launching or invoking in addition to executing and running. An execution processor comes in many forms.
CompilerIn computing, a compiler is software that translates computer code written in one programming language (the source language) into another language (the target language). The name "compiler" is primarily used for programs that translate source code from a high-level programming language to a low-level programming language (e.g., assembly language, object code, or machine code) to create an executable program.Program lifecycle phaseA program lifecycle phase is a distinct period of time that is relevant to the operation of a computer program as it transitions from development to execution. Any distinct period in a program's life cycle in which the operational state of the program changes can be identified as a time. For example, compile time is when a program is compiled and link time is when a program is linked. Also, phases can often be divided into component phases.
Code generation (compiler)In computing, code generation is part of the process chain of a compiler, in which an intermediate representation of source code is converted into a form (e.g., machine code) that the target system can readily execute. Sophisticated compilers typically perform multiple passes over various intermediate forms.Object codeIn computing, object code or object module is the product of an assembler or compiler. In a general sense, object code is a sequence of statements or instructions in a computer language, usually a machine code language (i.e., binary) or an intermediate language such as register transfer language (RTL). The term indicates that the code is the goal or result of the compiling process, with some early sources referring to source code as a "subject program".
Source CodeSource Code is a 2011 science fictionaction thriller film directed by Duncan Jones and written by Ben Ripley. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a US Army officer who is sent into an eight-minute virtual re-creation of a real-life train explosion, and tasked with determining the identity of the terrorist who bombed it. Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, and Jeffrey Wright play supporting roles.Compile-time function executionIn computing, compile-time function execution (or compile-time function evaluation, or general constant expressions) is the ability of a compiler, that would normally compile a function to machine code and execute it at run time, to execute the function at compile time. This is possible if the arguments to the function are known at compile time, and the function does not make any reference to or attempt to modify any global state (i.e. it is a pure function).
BytecodeBytecode (also called portable code or p-code) is an instruction set designed for efficient execution by a software interpreter. Unlike human-readablesource code, bytecodes are compact numeric codes, constants, and references (normally numeric addresses) that encode the result of compiler parsing and performing semantic analysis of things like type, scope, and nesting depths of program objects.
ComputingComputing is any goal-oriented activity that requires, benefits from, or creates computing machinery. It includes the study and experimentation of algorithmic processes, and the development of both hardware and software. Computing encompasses scientific, engineering, mathematical, technological, and social aspects.
Software developmentSoftware development is the process of designing, creating, testing, and maintaining software applications to meet specific user needs or business objectives. The process is more encompassing than programming, writing code, because it includes conceiving the goal, evaluating feasibility, analyzing requirements, design, testing and release.
ParsingParsing, syntax analysis, or syntactic analysis is a process of analyzing a string of symbols, either in natural language, computer languages or data structures, conforming to the rules of a formal grammar by breaking it into parts. The term parsing comes from Latin pars (orationis), meaning part (of speech). The term has slightly different meanings in different branches of linguistics and computer science.
