A center-fire (or centerfire) is a type of metallic cartridge used in firearms, where the primer is located at the center of the base of its casing (i.e. "case head"). Unlike rimfire cartridges, the centerfire primer is typically a separate component seated into a recessed cavity (known as the primer pocket) in the case head and is replaceable by reloading the cartridge. Centerfire cartridges have supplanted the rimfire cartridge, with the exception of a few small calibers.

Rimfire ammunitionRimfire ammunitionRimfire ammunition (also rim-fire) is a type of metallic cartridge used in firearms where the primer is located within a hollow circumferential rim protruding from the base of its casing. When fired, the gun's firing pin strikes and crushes the rim against the edge of the barrel breech, sparking the primer compound within the rim and igniting the propellant within the case.Primer (firearms)Primer (firearms)In firearms and artillery, the primer () is the chemical and/or device responsible for initiating the propellantcombustion that will propel the projectiles out of the gun barrel..22 caliber.22 caliber.22 caliber, or 5.6 mm, refers to a common firearms bore diameter of 0.22 inch (5.6 mm) in both rimfire and centerfire cartridges. Cartridges in this caliber include the very widely used .22 Long Rifle and .223 Remington/5.56×45mm NATO. .22 inch is also a popular air gunpellet caliber, second only to the ubiquitous .177 caliber.Cartridge (firearms)Cartridge (firearms)A cartridge, also known as a round, is a type of pre-assembled firearm ammunition packaging a projectile (bullet, shot, or slug), a propellant substance (smokeless powder, black powder substitute, or black powder) and an ignition device (primer or percussion cap) within a metallic, paper, or plastic case that is precisely made to fit within the barrelchamber of a breechloading gun, for convenient transportation and handling during shooting.FirearmFirearmGun for an individualThe M16 rifle and the AK-47, two common firearms with significant influences on firearm designA firearm is any type of gun that shootsprojectiles using high explosive pressure generated from combustion (deflagration) of chemical propellant, most often black powder in antique firearms and smokeless powder in modern firearms. Small arms is a subset of light firearms that is designed to be readily carried and operated by an individual.List of rimfire cartridgesList of rimfire cartridgesBelow is a list of rimfire cartridges (RF), ordered by caliber, small to large. Rimfire ammunition is a type of metallic cartridge whose primer is located within a hollow circumferential rim protruding from the base of its casing. The most common rimfire cartridges are chambered for .17 caliber and .22 caliber.RifleRifleA rifle is a long-barreled firearm designed for accurate shooting, distinguished by having a barrel cut with a helical or spiralling pattern of grooves (rifling). Most rifles are designed to be held with both hands and braced against the shoulder via a buttstock for stability. Rifles are used in warfare, law enforcement, hunting and target shooting sports.ShotgunShotgunA shotgun (also known as a scattergun, peppergun, or historically as a fowling piece) is a long-barreledfirearm designed to shoot a straight-walled cartridge known as a shotshell, which discharges either numerous small spherical projectiles called shot, or a single solid projectile called a slug.HandloadingHandloadingHandloading is the practice of making firearm cartridges by manually assembling the individual components (metallic/polymer case, primer, propellant and projectile), rather than purchasing mass-produced, factory-loaded commercial ammunition.HandgunHandgunA handgun is a firearm designed to be usable with only one hand. It is distinguished from a long gun (i.e., carbine, rifle, shotgun, submachine gun, or machine gun) which typically is intended to be held by both hands and braced against the shoulder. Handguns have shorter effective ranges compared to long guns, lack stocks, and are much harder to shoot accurately.5 mm caliber5 mm caliberThis is a list of firearmcartridges which have bullets in the 5.00 to 5.99 mm (0.197 to 0.236 in) caliber range. Length refers to the cartridge case length.OAL refers to the overall length of the cartridge. All measurements are in mm (in).
