In computing, batch processing is the running of a softwarejob in an automated and unattended way. A user schedules a job to run and then waits for a processing system to run it. Typically, a job is scheduled to run at a configured time of day or when an event occurs or when computer resources are available.

Job Control LanguageJob Control LanguageJob Control Language (JCL) is a programming language for scripting and launching batch jobs on IBM mainframecomputers. JCL code determines which programs to run, and with which files and devices for input and output. Parameters in the JCL can also provide accounting information for tracking the resources used by a job and can set which machine the job should run on. There are two major variants based on host platform and associated lineage.Scripting languageScripting languageIn computing, a script is a relatively short and simple set of instructions that typically automate an otherwise manual process. The act of writing a script is called scripting. A scripting language or script language is a programming language that is used for scripting. Originally, scripting was limited to automating shells in operating systems, and languages were relatively simple.Operating systemOperating systemAn operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware and software resources, and provides common services for computer programs. Time-sharing operating systems schedule tasks for efficient use of the system and may also include accounting software for cost allocation of processor time, mass storage, peripherals, and other resources.Job schedulerJob schedulerComputer application for controlling unattended background program execution of jobs A job scheduler is a computer application for controlling unattended background program execution of jobs. This is commonly called batch scheduling, as execution of non-interactive jobs is often called batch processing, though traditional job and batch are distinguished and contrasted; see that page for details.ScalabilityScalabilityScalability is the property of a system to handle a growing amount of work. One definition for software systems specifies that this may be done by adding resources to the system. In an economic context, a scalable business model implies that a company can increase sales given increased resources. For example, a package delivery system is scalable because more packages can be delivered by adding more delivery vehicles.Computer AutomationComputer AutomationComputer Automation, Inc. was a minicomputer and industrial control computer manufacturer founded by David H. Methvin in 1968, based originally in Newport Beach, California, United States. It opened a sales, support and repair arm in the UK in 1972, based at Hertford House, Maple Cross, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. Later relocated to Suite 2 Milfield House, Croxley Centre, Croxley Green, Watford, Hertfordshire.ComputingComputingComputing is any goal-oriented activity that requires, benefits from, or creates computing machinery. It includes the study and experimentation of algorithmic processes, and the development of both hardware and software. Computing encompasses scientific, engineering, mathematical, technological, and social aspects.Event (computing)Event (computing)In computing, an event is a detectable occurrence or change in state that the system is designed to monitor, such as user input, hardware interrupt, system notification, or change in data or conditions. When associated with an event handler, an event triggers a response. The handler may run synchronously, where the execution thread is blocked until the event handler completes its processing, or asynchronously, where the event may be processed later.SoftwareSoftwareSoftware (SW) consists of computer programs that instruct the execution of a computer. Software also includes design documents and specifications. The history of software is closely tied to the development of digital computers in the mid-20th century. Early programs were written in the machine language specific to the hardware. At (command)At (command)at is a shell command for scheduling commands to be executed once, at a future time. The command was originally developed for use with Unix and is now available on a variety of Unix-like systems, as well as Windows, and ReactOS.Job (computing)In computing, a job is a unit of work or unit of execution (that performs that work). A component of a job (as a unit of work) is called a task or a step (if sequential, as in a job stream).System resourceSystem resourceA computersystem resource is any hardware or software aspect of limited availability that is accessible to a computer system. Like any resource, computer system resources can be exhausted, and issues arise due to scarcity. Resource management, a key aspect of designinghardware and software, includes preventing resource leaks (not releasing a resource done with it) and handling resource contention (when multiple processes want to access the same resource).User (computing)User (computing)A user is a person who uses a computer or networkservice. A user typically has a user account and is recognized by the system through a username. Some software products provide services to other systems and have no direct end users. End userEnd users are the ultimate human users (also referred to as operators) of a software product. The end user stands in contrast to users who support or maintain the product such as sysops, database administrators and computer technicians.
