An active-pixel sensor (APS) is an image sensor where each pixel sensor unit cell has a photodetector (typically a pinned photodiode) and one or more active transistors. APS sensors are used in digital camera technologies such as cell phone cameras, web cameras, most modern digital pocket cameras, most digital single-lens reflex cameras (DSLRs), mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras (MILCs), and for, e.g., blood cells.

Image sensorImage sensorAn image sensor or imager is a sensor used for imaging. It detects and conveys information used to form an image. It does so by converting the variable attenuation of light waves (as they pass through or reflect off objects) into signals, small bursts of current that convey the information. The waves can be light or other electromagnetic radiation.PhotodiodePhotodiodeA photodiode is a semiconductor diode sensitive to photon radiation, such as visible light, infrared or ultraviolet radiation, X-rays and gamma rays. It produces an electrical current when it absorbs photons. This can be used for detection and measurement applications, or for the generation of electrical power in solar cells. Photodiodes are used in a wide range of applications throughout the electromagnetic spectrum from visible light photocells to gamma ray spectrometers.Digital single-lens reflex cameraDigital single-lens reflex cameraSingle-lens reflex camera with a digital image sensor and recording mechanismThe photographer can see the subject in the mirror before taking an image. When taking an image the mirror will swing up and light will go to the sensor instead.Camera phoneCamera phoneMobile phone with photographic capabilityCamera phone clamped to a tripodCamera phones allow instant, automatic photo sharing. There is no need for a cable or removable card to connect to a desktop or laptop to transfer photos, though they can be used optionally. A camera phone is a mobile phone that is able to capture photographs and often record video using one or more built-in digital cameras. It can also send the resulting image wirelessly and conveniently.Digital cameraDigital cameraA digital camera, also called a digicam, is a camera that uses digital storage to capture images. Most cameras produced since the start of the 21st century are digital, largely replacing cameras that captured images on photographic film or film stock. Many digital cameras are now integrated into mobile devices such as smartphones. However, high-end dedicated digital cameras are still commonly used by professionals.PixelPixelIn digital imaging, a pixel (abbreviated px), pel, or picture element is the smallest addressable element of a raster image. In a display device, dot matrix printer, or ASCII art a pixel is the smallest element whose output can generally be controlled independently. The concept of a picture element dates to the earliest days of electronic imaging.MOSFETMOSFETType of field-effect transistorTwo power MOSFETs in D2PAKsurface-mount packages.TransistorTransistorA transistor is a semiconductor device used to amplify or switch electrical signals and power. It is one of the basic building blocks of modern electronics. It is composed of semiconductor material, usually with at least three terminals for connection to an electronic circuit. A voltage or current applied to one pair of the transistor's terminals controls the current through another pair of terminals.AmplifierAmplifierAn amplifier, electronic amplifier or (informally) amp is an electronic device that can increase the magnitude of a signal (a time-varying voltage or current). It is a two-port electronic circuit that uses electric power from a power supply to increase the amplitude (magnitude of the voltage or current) of a signal applied to its input terminals, producing a proportionally greater amplitude signal at its output.PhotodetectorPhotodetectorPhotodetectors, also called photosensors, are devices that detect light or other forms of electromagnetic radiation and convert it into an electrical signal. They are essential in a wide range of applications, from digital imaging and optical communication to scientific research and industrial automation.Mirrorless cameraMirrorless cameraA mirrorless camera is a type of digital camera. Most cameras, including smartphones, lack mirrors, but the term mirrorless is primarily used to describe digital interchangeable lens cameras. Mirrorless cameras have become the most popular kind of interchangeable lens camera in both professional and amateur use, surpassing DSLRs, which use a mirror system.WebcamWebcamA webcam is a video camera which is designed to record or stream to a computer or computer network. They are primarily used in video telephony, live streaming and social media, and security. Webcams can be built-in computer hardware, like a laptop, or peripheral devices, and are commonly connected to a device using USB or wireless protocol. Webcams have been used on the Internet as early as 1993, and the first widespread commercial one became available in 1994.
