ASCII art is a graphic design technique that uses computers for presentation and consists of pictures pieced together from the 95 printable (from a total of 128) characters defined by the ASCII Standard from 1963 and ASCII compliant character sets with proprietary extended characters (beyond the 128 characters of standard 7-bit ASCII). The term is also loosely used to refer to text-based visual art in general. ASCII art can be created with any , and is often used with free-form languages.

ASCIIASCIICharacter encoding standardASCII ( ), an acronym for American Standard Code for Information Interchange, is a character encoding standard for representing a particular set of 95 (English-language–focused) printable and 33 control characters – a total of 128 code points. The set of available punctuation had significant impact on the syntax of computer languages and text markup.Monospaced fontMonospaced fontA monospaced font, also called a fixed-pitch, fixed-width, or non-proportional font, is a computer font whose letters and characters each occupy the same amount of horizontal space. This contrasts with variable-width fonts, where the letters and spacings have different widths. Monospaced fonts are customary on typewriters and for typesetting computer code. Monospaced fonts were widely used in early computers and computer terminals, which had limited graphical capabilities.Text editorText editorA text editor is interactive software that allows a user to plain text, such as Notepad. As with any software, a text editor can be installed onto a system, but often a relatively simple text editor is included in a default installation of an operating system (OS) since editing text files is a relatively basic need for any system and since a simple text editor can be provided at relatively low cost.Courier (typeface)Courier (typeface)Courier is a monospaced slab serif typeface designed in the mid-1950s by Howard "Bud" Kettler (1919–1999) for IBM. The Courier name and design concept are in the public domain. Courier has been adapted for use as a computer font, and versions of it are installed on most desktop computers. HistoryIBM did not trademark the name Courier, so the name and its design are now public domain.TypefaceTypefaceA typeface is a design of letters, numbers and other symbols, to be used in printing or for electronic display. Most typefaces include variations in size (e.g., 24 point), weight (e.g., light, bold), slope (e.g., italic), width (e.g., condensed), and so on. Each of these variations of the typeface is a font. There are thousands of different typefaces in existence, with new ones being developed constantly. The profession of designing typefaces is called type design.Character (computing)Character (computing)In computing and telecommunications, a character is the encoded representation of a natural language character (including letter, numeral and punctuation), whitespace (space or tab), or a control character (controls computer hardware that consumes character-based data). A sequence of characters is called a string. Some character encoding systems represent each character using a fixed number of bits whereas other systems use varying sizes.Graphic designGraphic designGraphic design is a profession, academic discipline and applied art that involves creating visual communications intended to transmit specific messages to social groups, with specific objectives. Graphic design is an interdisciplinary branch of design and of the fine arts. Its practice involves creativity, innovation and lateral thinking using manual or digital tools, where it is usual to use text and graphics to communicate visually.ComputerComputerProgrammable machine that processes dataComputers and computing devices from different eras—left to right, top to bottom: Early vacuum-tube computer (ENIAC)Mainframe computer (IBM System/360)Smartphone (LYF Water 2)Desktop computer (IBM ThinkCentre S50 with monitor)Supercomputer (IBM Summit)A computer is a machine that can be programmed to automatically carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations (computation).TypewriterTypewriterMechanical device for typing charactersMechanical typewriters, such as this 1930s Underwood, were long-time standards in government agencies, newsrooms, and offices. This late 1960s Olivetti Valentine typewriter designed by Ettore Sottsass became a pop-culture icon.A typewriter is a mechanical or electromechanical machine for typing characters.Free-form languageIn computer programming, a free-form language is a programming language in which the positioning of characters on the page in program text is insignificant. Program text does not need to be placed in specific columns as on old punched card systems, and frequently ends of lines are insignificant. Whitespace characters are used only to delimit tokens, and have no other significance.ConsolasConsolasConsolas is a monospacedtypeface designed by Luc(as) de Groot. It is a part of the ClearType Font Collection, a suite of fonts that take advantage of Microsoft's ClearType font rendering technology. It has been included with Windows since Windows Vista, Microsoft Office 2007 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. It is the only standard Windows Vista font with a slash through the zero character. It is the default font for Microsoft Notepad starting with Windows 8.ArtArtCreative work to evoke aesthetic responseVisual artworks: (clockwise from upper left) an 1887 self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh; a female ancestor figure by a Chokwe artist; detail from The Birth of Venus (c. 1484 – c. 1486) by Sandro Botticelli; and an OkinawanShisa lionArt is a diverse range of cultural activity centered around works utilizing creative or imaginative talents, which are expected to evoke a worthwhile experience, generally through an expression of emotional power, conceptual ideas, technical proficiency, or beauty.
