He was frequently injured, which caused the Wednesday fans to voice dissent about a clause in his contract which stipulated that he would automatically receive £7,500 per game, which he would miss through injury. He barely played in the 2000–01 season, the last of his contract, due to a groin injury, but he said in May 2001 that he wanted to return to playing.

Jonk and his wife Gina have two children as of 2001. When he played for Sheffield Wednesday, they lived in Dore, South Yorkshire. Jonk is a Catholic; while many of his Dutch teammates were raised in the church, he was the only one of his contemporaries to make the
