History

The first settlement at West Milton was made in 1807. West Milton was named for

John Milton John Milton (9 December 1608 – 8 November 1674) was an English poet, polemicist, and civil servant. His 1667 epic poem ''Paradise Lost'' was written in blank verse and included 12 books, written in a time of immense religious flux and politic ...

, an English poet. A post office called Milton was established in 1824, and the name was changed to West Milton in 1829. The village was incorporated around 1834.

Government

West Milton uses the council-manager government system. In this system, the mayor is the ceremonial head, elected by the public every four years. The council chooses a City Manager, who holds administrative authority over the city government. Council members are selected on a nonpartisan, at-large ballot.
