History

The city of Warfield developed in the early 1850s after a

was established by George Rogers Clark Floyd and John Warfield of

. The post office was established on April 15, 1856, and was named after the latter of the two men. Floyd further developed the city as the shipping point for his coal mine, the first to open in future Martin County. Warfield served as the county seat from 1870 to 1873, when it was moved to Inez.
