Anić also taught at universities in Germany in 1966/1967, Sweden in 1976 and in Slovenia. In 1974, he moved back to the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. He became a full professor in 1976. . As a linguist, Vladimir Anić was a staunch descriptivist; he saw his dictionary as "not a book of best words, but a book of all words", and stressed the need for language creativity and freedom as a counterweight against purism.

Legacy

Anić's work was one of the major underpinnings for the online Croatian dictionary ''Hrvatski jezični portal'' in 2006.
