VMRO–NP was founded on 4 July 2004 by former VMRO–DPMNE leader

. Vesna Janevska became the party's first president. In the 2006 parliamentary election, VMRO–NP won 6.1% of the vote and 6 seats in the Assembly. In the 2011 parliamentary election, VMRO–NP received 28,500 votes (2.51%), losing all of its seats. In April 2007, Gjorgji Trendafilov became the party's leader. VMRO–NP remained an extra-parliamentary party until the 2020 parliamentary election, when it participated in the We Can alliance led by the

(SDSM) and won one seat. Georgievski succeeded to the position of party president on 26 February 2012. In the 2024 parliamentary elections, the party participated in a coalition led by SDSM and lost one seat.
