Shiota was elevated to town status on October 5, 1918. Nishiureshino was elevated to town status on April 1, 1929 and renamed Ureshino. The town of Ureshino annexed Higashiureshino on April 1, 1933 and Yoshida on April 1, 1955, whereas Shiota annexed Gochōda and Kuma on September 1, 1956. The city of Ureshino was formed on January 1, 2006, by the merger of the towns of Ureshino, and Shiota (both from Fujitsu District).
