consists of five members: club leader Mai Otonashi, first-year student Rina Godai, nervous Sayuri Ichinose, fashionable Nozomi Mitaka, and nerdy Nanase Nikaidō. Rina is sick of the club always losing and plans to quit. Mai wants everyone to enjoy the club in their own way, and tries to prevent Rina for leaving, as doing so would reduce the number of club members to below the school club limit. Rina challenges Mai to a one-on-one match, but she leaves part-way through beliving Mai is not taking it seriously. During the match, a
