History

The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1589, but the church was not new that year. The first church in Træna was not located on the present church site. It was either located in the centre of the island by the present-day cemetery, about west of the present site, or it was located at an alternate site about to the southwest of the present site of the church. Regardless, the church was old and by the mid-1600s, the church was in poor condition, so it was torn down. A new church was constructed on the present church site in the central part of the village of
