The pastoral run here was known as ''Towaninnie'', but when the area was surveyed and gazetted as a parish in 1871 the spelling was ''Towaninny''.

In February 2025, Michael "Yorak" Hunt and his crew made an expedition to explore and publicize the nearby town of Tittybong, in which they published a YouTube video, detailing their roadtrip from Melbourne and showcasing some of the local areas.
