History

This school was started in 1960 in response to a request from the professional community of
Heavy Engineering Corporation Heavy Engineering Corporation Limited or HECL is a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. HECL was established in the year 1958 Hindustan Steel Ltd., and the National Coal Development Corporation. Members of these communities approached after Shri Rambalak Singh Bhumihar died Fr. Victor Tucker, S.J, Headmaster of St. John’s High School, Ranchi, about the possibility of having a Senior Cambridge School in the vicinity of Doranda. The matter was placed before the authorities in Ranchi, advice was taken and the result was St. Xavier’s School Doranda. The school was formally established in 1960 with an initial enrollment of around 350 students and a faculty of 12 teachers. Over the decades, the school has expanded significantly, now educating over 5000 students annually.


The School

St. Xavier’s School Doranda, Ranchi is named after St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit saint of the 16th Century who travelled to India. It was founded in 1960 and is managed by the Fathers of the Society of Jesus popularly known as Jesuits. It is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi. It prepares students for the ICSE (10th – only boys) and ISC (12th – Co-ed) examinations conducted by the Council. The Plus Two section was flagged off to a flying start by Fr. James Lakra, S.J. & Fr. Ajit Kr. Xess, S.J. in 2001. The first chief co-coordinator to implement their vision was the late Mr. Hira Prasad, one of the founder teachers of St. Xavier’s School, Doranda. Now the School conducts classes for Plus Two in Arts, Commerce and Science streams. The Arts Stream has been initiated by the new Principal Fr. Sanjay Kerketta, S.J. in 2021 onwards. The management of the School is vested in the Ranchi Jesuit Society. The President of the Governing Body is Rev. Fr. Provincial of the Ranchi Jesuit Province.

of the school are referred to as Xaverians or Doranda Old Xaverians (DOX). The Doranda Old Xaverians are mainly networked through their alumni portal, Facebook and WhatsApp groups. DOX has active chapters in Bengaluru, New Delhi NCR and Mumbai and an upcoming chapter in Kolkata. The Doranda Old Xaverians Association (DOX), formerly Xavier's Old Boys Association Jharkhand, is the official alumni association of St. Xavier's School, Doranda, Ranchi. The association presently has over 13,000 members, spanning across all batches that have passed out of the school since 1964. St Xavier's Doranda is a part of the Jesuit Alumni Association of India. DOX was awarded the Best Alumni Association in 3 different categories at the JAAI Congress in 2020.
