Red Thread was founded in September 2012 by Ragnar Tørnquist, creator of ''The Longest Journey'' and ''Dreamfall'' sagas, and '' The Secret World'' and '' Anarchy Online'' universes. Since 2016, the company has been working on ''Svalbard'', which was among six Norwegian games to receive grants from the Norwegian Film Institute in 2023, in addition to financial support from Creative Europe, Viken Filmsenter and Epic MegaGrants. In 2024, the company released '' Dustborn'', which was followed by the announcement of ''Hello Sunshine'', a survival role-playing game set in a post-apocalyptic world. The development of the latter was supported by 2,195,000 million NOK (approx. $206,000) from the Norwegian Film Institute. The company is also working on ''Project M'', an untitled RPG which has received 7.3 million NOK (approx. $640,000) from the Norwegian Film Institute.
