History

Platteville was founded on May 27, 1871, and was incorporated on January 1, 1887. The town was named for its location on the Platte River.

The racial makeup of Platteville was 73.84% White, 0.55% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 22.24% from other races, and 2.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 35.19%. The age distribution was: 32.8% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 6.5% 65 or older. The median age was 30 years.
