As of the 2020 United States census, there were 6,260 people, 2,428 households, and 1,489 families residing in the town.

As of the 2010 United States census, there were 6,102 people, 2,323 households, and 1,429 families residing in the town.


2000 census

In 2000, 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.8% were married couples living together, 21.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% were non-families. 33.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.96. In 2000, the town population was spread out, with 27.0% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 85.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.3 males.
