Orrville was laid out in 1852, and named after Judge Smith Orr, proprietor. A post office called Orrville has been in operation since 1852.

At the 2010 census, there were 8,380 people, 3,337 households, and 2,273 families living in the city. The population density was . There were 3,690 housing units at an average density of . The racial makeup of the city was 89.7% White, 4.9% African American, 0.1% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 1.3% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.5%. Of the 3,337 households, 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 31.9% were non-families. 26.5% of households were one person and 11.9% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.96. The median age was 39 years. 24.3% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.8% were from 25 to 44; 26.9% were from 45 to 64; and 16.1% were 65 or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.7% male and 51.3% female.

Of the 3,305 households 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 24.8% of households were one person and 10.0% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 7.55 and the average family size was 3.04. The age distribution was 27.6% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% 65 or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.6 males. The median household income was $36,500 and the median family income was $46,728.
