History

Oberkirch is first mentioned in 1036 as ''Ecclesia superior'' though this comes from a 14th Century copy of the earlier document. In 1052 it was mentioned as ''Obernkilch''.


Geography

Oberkirch has an area of . Of this area, 74.2% is used for agricultural purposes, while 13.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 12.1% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.3%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains). , 13.5% of the total land area was forested.
